The rich and respected Clutter family, Herbert, Bonnie, son Kenyon and daughter Nancy were brutally murdered in the small village of Holcomb, gunned down by Dick Hickock and Perry Smith. Truman Capote was fascinated by the killings, by the meaningless slaughter, the lack of motive, by the intensive police operation mounted to track the killers and by their incredible testimony. For each man sought to condemn the other with a devastating confession- and started a relentless ride on the wheel of justice. Their inevitable convictions for first degree murder earned them the death penalty. Numerous appeals- right up to the Supreme Court- followed. But there could only b e one outcome. Smith and Hickock were hanged at ‘The Corner’ in Kansa State Penitentiary. This scene of extreme judicial cruelty haunts Capote today, years after he created his stunning document, a controversial study.
